"Well they told us Kia was going to save us all. I was called for the Maintenance interview about 8 months ago. I spent a day at the training facility. Interviewed with two nice gentleman and then was interviewed by someone and we played role playing with some cards to get into my head. After this I took a computer test. Total time about 6 hours. The next day at 9:00am Kia called back and invited me to take the skills test. About a week later I took the all day skills test. After this and hearing nothing back from Kia I called. Kia said no news is good news. After about a month I called again and got the same answer. After about 3 months I called and got the same answer. I hear the Production team members have to take a 40 hour test at their own expense with no gaurantee of a job. Does anyone have any experience with the Kia hiring proccess or some of the Kia Suppliers?"..... Unemployed in Salem Alabama

May 5--Kia auto supplier Johnson Controls will be casting a net in Columbus Saturday in hopes of finding 100 qualified employees.

Milwaukee-based Johnson Controls is seeking production workers for its 130,000-square-foot plant being built in nearby West Point, Ga. Construction is expected to be completed by mid-summer.

The jobs will pay $9.50 to $11 an hour, depending on specific duties and work experience.

Saturday's job fair will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Georgia Department of Labor's Columbus Career Center, 700 Veterans Parkway.

Basic criteria for applicants range from being at least 18 years old and having a high school diploma to passing a background check and a physical agility test.

Those holding a Work Ready Certification from the states of Georgia or Alabama might have an edge, however.

"Work Ready is more of an assessment thing," said Columbus Technical College spokeswoman Cheryl Myers. "People take these evaluations and they are certified at certain levels."

Columbus Tech and Chattahoochee Valley Community College in Phenix City both offer the test, which covers basic skills to prepare job seekers for employment.

"The test is part of our Ready to Work training program, and it's free to those people who participate in that," said Darlene Thompson, administrative assistant to CVCC's dean of work force development.

The Johnson Controls factory will make seat systems and door panels for the Kia Sorento sport utility vehicle that will be assembled at the main Kia plant in West Point.

This will be the first wave of hiring for Johnson Controls, which drew nearly 500 prospects at a job fair last month in LaGrange, Ga.

When the plant is in full operation, it will employ about 300. Those are among the estimated 7,500 Kia parts supplier jobs coming to the area.

The main plant will have about 2,500 on the payroll when it hits full stride, capable of churning out 300,000 vehicles per year. The factory is projected to open in November.

Johnson Controls Inc. two weeks ago reported a quarterly loss of $193 million on net sales of $6.3 billion.

The sharp decline in auto sales was to blame, the company said, with production down 51 percent in North America and 41 percent in Europe compared to the year before. The firm noted that is a level not seen in 40 years.

"We started to see improvements in the financial performance of our Automotive Experience business toward the end of the second quarter, and we expect significantly lower operating losses in the third quarter," Stephen Roell, Johnson's chairman and CEO, said in a statement.

He projected the company's earnings will rebound into the black in the final two quarters of its fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.
